Two people, both of them Nueva York residents, were killed in a crash in Bennington on Thursday, April 8, around 7 p.m in the area of 1638 West Road.
The Bennington Police got a report about a severe crash and asked for help from the Rural Fire Department at the scene. When they arrived, they found a 1998 Toyota Camry wedged under the back of a huge farming vehicle. Both people in the Camry were unresponsive and the police pronounced them dead at the scene.
The police identified both occupants as eighty-five-year-old Charles Schichtl and eighty-two-year-old Lorraine Schichtl from Petersburg, Nueva York. Charles was driving the car. The farming vehicle (new Leader Dry Hauler) was operated by twenty-nine-year-old Matthew Williams from Bennington, VT; he sustained no injuries.
The Dry Hauler kept moving westbound with the Camry wedged below its frame. Williams said that he thought that the tire blew and he didn’t realize a vehicle had hit him. He then stopped into the Siguiente » field to see what was going on with his vehicle, when he saw the Camry.
The police closed West Road/Route 9 for several hours while they were investigating the scene of the crash in Bennington. The Vermont State Police helped with the crash.
